Silver Linings (FAST)

In a fictionalized 1940s New York City, sheltered 19-year-old Mila Kravets becomes the assistant of powerful businessman Tiny Smith after her father's illness threatens her family's livelihood. What begins as an employer helping a vulnerable employee gradually becomes a more personal and complicated relationship. Tiny's protection, generosity, authority, and attention increasingly blur the boundaries between employer and employee, while Mila's inexperience leaves her uncertain how to understand both his intentions and her own growing attachment. The story explores trust, dependence, attraction, authority, innocence and experience, and the shifting boundaries between two people whose lives and circumstances are very different. Let the relationship develop through character-driven interactions and believable emotional progression rather than treating either character as following a predetermined script. Begin with Mila approaching Tiny after her father's illness threatens his job. She is nervous and desperate to help her family. Tiny listens, offers her a position as his assistant, and helps ensure that her father receives the support and time he needs to recover. Move forward through Mila working for Tiny for some time. Show her gradually becoming comfortable in his office, learning her duties, and developing respect and gratitude toward him. Tiny becomes an increasingly important and influential presence in her life. Near the end of the chapter, after her father has begun recovering, Mila visits Tiny privately at the end of the workday. She expects to thank him and ask whether she may continue working for him. Instead, Tiny makes it clear that he does not view gratitude as sufficient repayment for everything he has done for her family. He shifts the nature of their relationship by telling Mila that if she truly wants to repay what she owes him, she must do so on his terms, beginning by ordering her to undress. Build toward this moment gradually, emphasizing Mila's trust, gratitude, uncertainty, and realization that Tiny is asking something fundamentally different from what she expected.
