Is RedQuill free? Yes. You can create a RedQuill account without a card and start writing straight away. Every free account gets free daily quills that refill once a day, a few bonus quills when you sign up, 2 Advanced Writes per week, and free reading of every public story in the community library.

What free does not mean is unlimited. Quills are the currency that pays for writing, and the free refill is sized for trying things out and writing a little each day. If you write a lot, you will run out, and that is the point where a paid membership makes sense.

This page explains exactly what you get on the free plan, how quills are spent, the honest ways to stretch them, and how to tell when upgrading is worth it.

What RedQuill gives you for free

Here is the free account next to a paid membership. Paid plans differ from each other in size, so the right column describes what memberships add in general.

The important part: the free account is not a stripped-down demo. You get the same story tools (chapters, steering, character profiles, the Lorebook, spicy level control, forking and Role Play mode). What changes with a membership is how much you can use them each day.

How free quills work

Quills are how RedQuill measures writing. Every action that generates or rewrites text costs quills, and reading costs nothing.

The daily refill

Free quills refill once a day at midnight UTC. Daily quills do not roll over, so anything you leave unused is gone at the next reset. Signup bonus quills are different: they stay in your balance until you spend them.

What a chapter costs

ActionQuill cost
Standard chapter (about 1,000 words)5 quills
Long chapter (about 1,500 to 2,500 words)About 1 quill per 200 words actually written
Epic chapter (about 2,500 to 5,000 words)About 1 quill per 200 words actually written
Editing a chapterQuills based on the chapter’s length
Role Play or character chat messageQuills per message
Reading public storiesFree

Long and Epic chapters are charged by the words you actually get, so if a chapter comes out shorter than the maximum, you pay less. You never pay for words you did not receive.

Advanced Writes

Writing Options decide how your chapter is written. Standard is the everyday option. Ember and Ink are the Advanced Writing options for stronger prose, and Auto picks for you. Free accounts get 2 Advanced Writes per week, resetting Sunday at 00:00 UTC. Save them for the chapters that matter most, like a first scene or a big turning point.

How to get free quills on RedQuill

There is no secret trick or generator for free quills, and any site promising one is not affiliated with RedQuill. These are the real ways to get and stretch them:

  1. Come back every day. The daily refill is the main source of free quills. Because it does not roll over, writing a little every day gets far more out of the free plan than one long session a week.
  2. Use your signup bonus. New accounts get a few bonus quills that stay until used. They are a good cushion for your first longer story.
  3. Keep a Quill streak. Quill streaks reward daily activity with bonus quills. Show up and write on consecutive days to earn them.
  4. Write at Standard length. A Standard chapter is about 1,000 words for 5 quills. It is the most predictable way to plan your day and the easiest way to keep a story moving on a small balance.
  5. Steer with a clear continue prompt. Telling RedQuill what you want next (“slow the pace, keep it in her point of view, end on a cliffhanger”) usually lands closer on the first try, so you spend fewer quills editing afterwards.
  6. Set up characters and the Lorebook early. Profiles and Lorebook entries keep names, looks and history consistent, which means fewer chapters you need to redo.

If you are brand new, our guide on how to set up your first story on RedQuill walks through the first prompt, character profiles and Lorebook entries step by step.

What a free day on RedQuill looks like

We will not give you a chapter count, because the free refill can vary. But here is an honest picture of how a free day tends to go.

You open the app, type a one-line prompt, and RedQuill writes the opening of your story in under a minute. You add a character profile or two, nudge the spicy level, and continue for a chapter or a few more at Standard length. Maybe you spend one of your weekly Advanced Writes on the scene you care about most. Then you browse the community library for free while you wait for tomorrow’s refill.

That is enough to start a story, see whether RedQuill writes the way you like, and keep a slow-burn project going over a week or two. It is not enough to binge an Epic-length novel in one night, and long roleplay sessions will drain the balance faster, since every message uses quills.

When it’s worth upgrading

Stay on the free plan if you mostly read, write a chapter or two a day, or are still figuring out whether AI fiction is for you. There is no time limit on a free account.

Upgrading starts to make sense when:

  • You run out most days. If the refill is gone before you are done writing, a bigger daily refill is the main thing a membership buys.
  • You write long. Long and Epic chapters use more quills, and multi-chapter novels add up.
  • You want more Advanced Writes. Paid plans give 30, 50 or 100 per week instead of 2.
  • You roleplay a lot. Role Play mode and character chat are among the most-used features on RedQuill, and memberships include more roleplay messages.
  • You want to keep your stories offline. The top plan adds EPUB and PDF downloads.

Memberships come monthly or annually, and annual billing saves up to about a third compared with monthly. You can upgrade any time and your quills update immediately. You can also cancel any time from Account Settings, and access continues to the end of the billing period. See current prices on the pricing page.

Yes. You can sign up without a card and write with free daily quills. Paid memberships add bigger daily refills and more features, but they are optional.

It is not a time-limited trial. The free account keeps working with a daily quill refill for as long as you use it. New accounts also get a few bonus quills to start.

How do I get free quills on RedQuill?

Free quills refill every day at midnight UTC. On top of that, new accounts get a signup bonus, and Quill streaks reward daily activity with bonus quills. Writing at Standard length helps the balance go further.

Do free quills roll over?

No. Daily quills reset each day, so unused ones do not carry over. Signup bonus quills stay in your balance until you spend them.

Yes. Every public story in the community library is free to read, in the browser or on your phone.

Is RedQuill really free or is there a catch?
