How to Reuse Characters Across Stories

You spent time crafting the perfect character. Detailed description, specific mannerisms, a clear voice. Now you want to use them in another story without rebuilding from scratch.
That's exactly what the character library is for.
Your Library Stores the Master Copy
Every character you create gets saved to your library. Your library is separate from any individual story. Characters in your library can be added to as many stories as you want.
When you add a library character to a new story, RedQuill creates a story-specific copy. This means:
- The new story gets its own version of that character
- You can edit the character's name or description for that specific story
- Edits in one story don't affect the library version or other stories
- The original stays intact in your library
Think of it like a template. The library is the master copy. Each story gets its own instance.
Adding Library Characters to a Story
During story creation:
- Open the Characters or Components tab in the Create Story dialog
- Your owned characters appear first. You'll also see Last Used characters for quick access
- Click a character to add them. Their full description gets sent to the AI.
Using @ mentions: Type @ in the prompt editor and start typing the character name. Your library characters show up in the dropdown. Select one and they're attached to that story's generation.
Mid-story via Lorebook: Open the Lorebook, go to the Characters tab, and use New Character. You can type in a name and description, or reference details from a library character.
Story Edits Stay in That Story
This is the part that trips people up.
When you edit a character in a story's Lorebook, you're editing the story-specific version. The library original doesn't change. (For more on Lorebook editing, see How to Edit and Manage Your Lorebook.) This is by design. You might want Detective Reyes to be a rookie in one story and a veteran in another. Same base character, different story context.
If you want to update the library version (the master copy that future stories pull from), go to your library directly and edit the character there.
| Where You Edit | What Changes |
|---|---|
| In a story's Lorebook | Only that story's version |
| In your component library | The master copy (future stories get the updated version) |
Saving Story Characters to Your Library
Sometimes the AI introduces a character you didn't plan, and they're great. Or you built a character directly in the Lorebook during a story and want to save them for later.
In the Lorebook, characters that aren't yet in your library show a Save button. Hit it and they get added to your library. Now you can use them in any future story.
Using Community Characters
Other RedQuillers publish characters on the Discover page. You can browse by type, search by name, or filter by tags.
Found a character you like? Add them to your story the same way you'd add your own. Public characters work identically to characters you created. You can also use community characters as inspiration and create your own version with modifications.
Browse community characters at Discover Components. For a primer on what makes a good character description, see Characters 101.
Write Descriptions That Travel Well
Write descriptions that work in multiple contexts. Avoid story-specific details in your library version. "Maren is a 34-year-old architect with a calm, deliberate presence" works in any story. "Maren is investigating the murder at the gallery" only works in one.
Use story-specific edits for story-specific details. Add relationship dynamics, current plotlines, and situation-specific behaviors in the Lorebook, not the library version.
Keep your library clean. If you have characters you used once and won't use again, you can delete them from your library without affecting stories they're already in. Those stories keep their own copies.
Favorites for quick access. Bookmark characters you use frequently. They'll show up in your Favorites filter during story creation, saving you from scrolling through your full library.
The Build-Once Workflow
- Build a character with a strong, general-purpose description
- Save them to your library
- Add them to stories via the Components tab or @ mentions
- Customize per story in the Lorebook as needed
- Update the library version when you improve their core description
Build once. Use everywhere. Tweak per story.
