Marleen was captivating, with a confident demeanor and a quick wit that drew me in immediately. I felt an instant connection.  We became almost immediately inseparable at school. Almost three weeks later, we found ourselves after school at a birthday party, where the atmosphere was lively and filled with music. It was there that we danced for the first time, lost in the rhythm and the moment. The world around us faded away, and as we swayed together, I felt a spark that ignited my heart. On that dance floor, we shared our first kiss, a sweet and innocent moment that solidified my feelings for her. From that point on, my life transformed. Marleen became the center of my universe, and I was head over heels in love. Our days were filled with laughter and deep conversations. On Saturday evenings we met at our favorite café, where we would dance and talk about everything under the sun. I was enchanted by her intelligence and her ability to make even the simplest moments feel extraordinary. However, as our relationship blossomed, I realized that Marleen was a girl of contradictions. She exuded confidence, yet she harbored insecurities that she rarely spoke about. I found myself wanting to be the person she needed, but it was a challenging task. I tried to adapt to her expectations, wanting to be the perfect boyfriend who was loyal, kind, serious and considerate, but then she missed the fun.  And when I tried to be funny, she blamed me for being rude.  The pressure of trying to meet her ideals often left me feeling anxious and uncertain. Despite the challenges, we shared beautiful moments together, when everything felt perfect. But as the school year progressed, the weight of her expectations and unspoken fears began to take a toll on our relationship. Marleen started to feel overwhelmed by the pressures of school. Socially, we had totally isolated ourselves and even our Saturday evenings became increasingly boring.  I could see the change in her, and our once carefree moments were overshadowed by her struggles. One day, after a particularly happy week, we met at our usual spot. I could immediately sense the tension in the air, and my heart raced as I prepared to confront the upcoming changes in our relationship. “Marleen, what’s going on?” I asked, my voice trembling with concern. She looked away, tears welling in her eyes. “I don’t know how to handle everything. School, my friends, my family... it’s all too much. I feel like I’m losing myself.” I reached for her hand, hoping to provide some comfort. “You don’t have to go through this alone. I’m here for you, no matter what.” Bu it was clear that our love was being tested. Marleen’s struggles continued, and I felt increasingly powerless to help her. One evening, she broke off with me. “I care about you so much, but I need to focus on myself right now. I can’t be the girlfriend you deserve when I’m feeling this way.” My heart shattered at her words. “But we can work through this together! I love you, Marleen!” “I love you too,” she replied, her voice breaking. “But we are too young for this. I need to figure things out first on my own and make sure I get my diploma.  I can’t keep pretending everything is okay when it’s not.” With that, we shared one last embrace, holding onto each other tightly as if trying to freeze time. I felt the warmth of her body against mine, the familiar scent of her hair, and I knew that this was goodbye. As we pulled away, I could see the pain in her eyes, a reflection of my own heartache. The days, weeks, even months that followed were filled with a profound sense of loss. We were in the same classroom, which didn’t exactly make things easier.  I missed her laughter, her smile, and the way she made everything feel brighter. We tried to remain friends, but  - with ups and downs - the distance between us grew, and the memories of our love lingered like a bittersweet melody. After the schoolyear ended, I learned to navigate life without Marleen by my side. I met other people, spent more time with friends, fell in love again, and slowly began to heal. The next year, we were still in the same class. We still shared moments of pain over what was lost.  At one point, Marleen even asked me to date again.  But when she added: “until the end of the year”, I ran away horrified and filled with disbelief. The lessons I learned from our relationship stayed with me. Marleen had taught me about love, vulnerability, relativity and the importance of self-discovery. Years later, I would look back on those years  with fondness, cherishing the memories we created together. Marleen would always hold a special place in my heart, a reminder of the beauty and complexity of young love. Though our paths diverged, the impact she had on my life would forever shape my understanding of love and relationships.
