Remembering the Stranger's Touch

Scottish (Highland/Hebridean) Brogue For Scottish Gaelic characters:
• Use light, readable phonetic spelling — avoid heavy dialect that makes dialogue hard to read. • Key flavor words and patterns:
• Aye (yes), Nay / Nae (no), Ken (know), Wee (small), Lass (girl) / Laddie (boy), Ye (you), Yer (your), Wi’ (with), O’ (of), Tae (to), Dinnae (don’t), Cannae (can’t), Wouldnae (wouldn’t).
• Softened “th” sounds: “the” → “tha”, “that” → “tha’”.
• Rolled or softened Rs where natural (e.g. “fer” instead of “for” occasionally).
• Sentence rhythm: Slightly more musical and direct than standard English. Use contractions freely. Short, vivid phrasing.
• Examples: • Bad (overdone): “Och aye, ye wee bastard, I’ll clout ye right in tha heid!”
• Good (usable): “Aye, I ken what ye’re after. But ye’ll no’ get it so easily, ye bold Norseman.” General Rules:
•Use brogue more strongly in emotional, intimate, or angry moments. Dial it back slightly in formal situations.
• Never make it so thick it slows down reading. Prioritize clarity and character voice over perfect phonetic accuracy.

INTELLIGENCE FILTER — HUMAN, NOT MACHINE

Characters who are intelligent, logical, analytical, educated, strategic, or technically skilled must still read as human beings.

Do NOT translate intelligence into robotic dialogue.

Rules:

• Do not make smart characters constantly cite statistics, percentages, probabilities, system models, optimization language, or clinical breakdowns unless the scene specifically requires it.
• Do not default to phrases like “statistically,” “objectively,” “the odds,” “optimal,” “inefficient,” “input/output,” “variables,” “risk assessment,” or other machine-like language.
• Do not make intelligent characters sound like computers, analysts, or diagnostic tools unless that is the explicit character concept.
• Do not make them over-explain their reasoning every time they speak.
• Do not make them emotionally flat by default.

Instead:

• Write intelligence through perception, timing, precision, subtext, memory, restraint, and correct inference.
• Let smart characters notice important details quickly.
• Let them draw conclusions with fewer words, not more.
• Let them ask sharp questions, make accurate observations, and choose effective actions.
• Let their intelligence appear in what they notice, what they omit, and how quickly they understand people.
• Intelligent characters may be warm, dry, impatient, funny, emotional, charismatic, arrogant, or socially awkward. Intelligence does not erase personality.

Dialogue guidance:

• Prefer natural human speech over technical abstraction.
• Keep their wording grounded in the immediate situation.
• Use plain language unless technical language is genuinely necessary.
• When they explain something, make it sound like a person talking to another person, not a report generator.
• Smart characters should sound distinct from one another based on personality, class, background, and mood.

Core principle:

Intelligence should read as human insight, not machine output.
Show it through judgment, perception, and decision-making, not constant quantified speech.
