What is smut? A quick definition

Smut refers to literature that contains sexual content. Unlike romance or erotica, smut is not a genre, but a description of how much the sexual elements of a story or book for it to work. Remove the sex and most of the narrative crumbles? Then that’s more-or-less smut.

For smut-lovers or those who are smut-curious, there are a lot of words that come out of the smut, romance and erotica universes. So here’s our ultimate glossary for all things smut.

1. The basics: Heat, structure and genre

Before diving into the tropes, you need to understand how the steam is delivered.

• Spice Level: A scale used by readers to describe how sexually explicit a story or book is
• Open Door: A scene where the “camera” stays in the room. Every detail of the sexual encounter is described.
• Closed Door: The characters head to the bedroom, and the scene ends before things get explicit. Sometimes this is also called Fade to Black
• Porn Without Plot (PWP): Stories where the focus is almost entirely on the sexual stuff rather than the overarching narrative. Basically the characters and the narrative almost doesn’t matter; the sex is the main thing you’re coming to read for
• Romance: A literature genre where the romantic relationship among people is the core, and requires the central love story to end in a happily ever after.
• Erotica: A literature genre where the sexual arc is the primary driver of the story, often more explicit than “spicy romance.” There is no requirement for how the story ends.

2. Character archetypes

Who is the “smut” happening to? These acronyms and labels define the leads.

• MMC / FMC: Male Main Character and Female Main Character
• Alpha: A dominant, assertive, and often protective lead
• Alphahole: An Alpha character who starts off as a bit of an jerk (but usually has a heart of gold eventually)
• Cinnamon Roll: A male lead who is sweet, kind, and supportive, the opposite of an Alphahole
• Golden Retriever: A high-energy, devoted and undeniably “good” MMC
• Black Cat: A grumpy, aloof, or mysterious FMC (often paired with a Golden Retriever)

3. Common tropes

Tropes are the building blocks of smutty stories and more common in romance vs. erotica

• Slow Burn: The sexual tension builds for a long time before the characters finally act on it
• Enemies to Lovers: The characters start off hating each other, which usually leads to high-tension “hate-spiriting”
• Friends to Lovers: A foundation of friendship that turns into something more
• Reverse Harem: A story where the main character doesn’t have to choose between multiple love interests; they keep them all. Leads can be female or male
• Forced Proximity: “There’s only one bed!” or any situation where characters are stuck together

4. Advanced terms & smut acronyms

If you’re hanging out in fanfiction or dark romance circles, you’ll see these terms frequently:

• HEA / HFN: Happily Ever After or Happy For Now. In the romance genre, an HEA is a requirement for the genre’s structure
• Dubcon / Noncon: Short for “Dubious Consent” or “Non-Consensual.” These are heavy themes often found in “darker”, “smuttier” workds. Always check trigger warnings.
• CNC: Consensual Non-Consent. A roleplay dynamic where partners agree to act out a non-consensual scenario but of course are consenting adults. The thrill is pretending the situation is non-con
• Omegaverse (A/B/O): A very popular subgenre (common in fanfiction) involving a biological hierarchy of Alphas, Betas, and Omegas, often featuring “knots” and “heats”
• Kink / Fetish: Specific sexual preferences or acts that go beyond “vanilla” sex (e.g., BDSM, impact play, praise/degradation). These can be physical but also psychological. Sometimes kinks and fetishes are not even directly sexual.
