Chapter 1

“Morning.”

The word hit me like a jolt of electricity, low and smooth, cutting through the quiet hum of the fridge. I froze mid-reach, my hand hovering over the carton of orange juice. Shit. I’d forgotten he was even here. Slowly, I straightened up, the hem of my oversized shirt brushing against the tops of my thighs as I turned to face him.

There he was. My best friend’s older brother, leaning casually against the kitchen doorway like he hadn’t just caught me bent over in nothing but this stupidly short shirt. His eyes—dark, steady—flicked down for the briefest moment before meeting mine again. He didn’t say anything else. Just stood there, one shoulder propped against the frame, his expression unreadable.

I swallowed hard, trying to play it cool. “You’re up early,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. I grabbed the juice carton and poured myself a glass, my fingers trembling just enough to make the liquid slosh slightly. I leaned back against the counter, one hip cocked, and took a slow sip, my eyes never leaving his.

He didn’t respond. Not with words, anyway. But his gaze—God, his gaze—was doing all the talking. It lingered on my legs, tracing the curve of my thighs where the shirt barely covered me, then drifted up to my waist, my chest, before finally settling on my face. There was no pretense about it, no attempt to look away or act like he wasn’t staring. And I… I didn’t stop him.

I shifted my weight slightly, letting the fabric ride up just a little higher, and pretended to stretch, arching my back just enough to make the shirt pull tight across my chest. His eyes followed every movement, dark and intent, and I could feel the heat of his stare like a physical touch.

I didn’t say anything else. Just set the glass down on the counter and walked past him, my bare feet padding softly against the tile floor. I could feel his eyes on me the entire time, burning into my back as I made my way down the hallway. My heart was pounding, my skin tingling with the awareness of his gaze, and I couldn’t help but smile to myself.

I knew exactly what he was thinking.

---

It had started like any other weekend. My best friend, Jess, had invited me over to her place after a night out. We’d been drinking, laughing, and by the time we stumbled through her front door, I was too tired to even think about going home. So, like I’d done a hundred times before, I crashed in her guest room.

What I hadn’t counted on was her brother being home.

Jess had mentioned it offhandedly earlier in the evening—“Oh, by the way, Ryan’s staying here this weekend”—but I hadn’t thought much of it. Ryan was… well, Ryan. Quiet, reserved, the kind of guy who kept to himself. We’d crossed paths a few times over the years, but we’d never really talked. He was just Jess’s older brother, someone who existed in the background of our friendship.

But this morning? This morning, he was anything but background.

I’d woken up feeling groggy and disoriented, my head pounding from last night’s drinks. The sun was already streaming through the blinds, and I groaned as I rolled out of bed, tugging at the oversized shirt I’d thrown on before passing out. It was one of Jess’s—soft and worn, hanging off one shoulder and barely skimming the tops of my thighs. I hadn’t bothered with shorts or a bra; it was just me and Jess, after all. Or so I’d thought.

The kitchen was empty when I shuffled in, the cool air from the open fridge a welcome relief against my flushed skin. I bent over, rummaging through the shelves for something cold to drink, when his voice broke the silence.

“Morning.”

And now here we were.

I could still feel his eyes on me as I walked away, the weight of his gaze making my skin prickle with anticipation. I didn’t look back—didn’t need to. I could picture him standing there, leaning against the doorway, his dark eyes tracking my every move. And I couldn’t help but wonder… what would happen if I turned around? If I walked back into that kitchen and let him get a closer look?

But I didn’t. Instead, I kept walking, my heart racing as I disappeared down the hallway. The tension between us was thick, electric, and I knew it wasn’t over. Not yet.

Ryan might have been quiet, but his eyes had said everything. And I… I wasn’t sure if I wanted to ignore it anymore.
