Chapter 1
The blue glow of the laptop screen was the only light in the room, a cold, solitary square in the overwhelming dark of the house. My thumb scrolled mindlessly, the repetitive motion a familiar comfort. Click. Scroll. Click. It was a late-night habit, a way to fill the silence while she was out with her friends. A meaningless distraction. Until it wasn’t.
My thumb stopped. A thumbnail, grainy and dim. My breath hitched. That wall color. The exact shade of ‘Tranquil Azure’ we’d spent a weekend arguing over and then painting together. That frame. The same cheap IKEA number holding a generic stock photo of a fern, because we’d never gotten around to putting a real picture in it.
A cold knot tightened in my stomach. Someone copied our bedroom. The thought was absurd, a fleeting attempt to rationalize the irrational. My finger, moving on its own, clicked the play button.
The video was shaky, amateur. But clear enough. A woman’s laughter rang out, tinny through my headphones. It wasn't just similar. It was hers. That specific, soft giggle that always seemed to catch in her throat. The one she made right before she told me a secret.
I’m wrong. I have to be wrong.
But then the camera panned. A silver necklace. The one I’d bought her for our anniversary. And just above the strap of her—her lacy black bra—was the tiny, distinct freckle on her left shoulder blade. The one I’d kissed a thousand times.
My hands went numb on the keyboard. The silence of the house, once comfortable, became a heavy, suffocating blanket. The walls felt like they were leaning in, watching me with her. I slammed the laptop shut. The click echoed in the dark.
It’s a deepfake. It’s old. It’s a fucking coincidence.
I opened it again. The video resumed. There she was, her back to the camera, her hips moving in a rhythm I knew intimately, but now it was for him. For a faceless man whose hands were gripping her, possessively, where mine should be. The sight was a physical blow. I fumbled for the volume knob, my heart hammering against my ribs as her moans, her moans, filled my ears, loud and wanting.
I’ve always wanted this.
Her whisper, a ghost in my headphones, slithered into my brain. I felt a traitorous heat coil low in my belly, a sharp, unwelcome jolt of arousal. My hand drifted into my lap, pressing against the hard ridge forming there. No. I jerked my hand away as if burned. Shame, hot and acidic, washed over me. This was all wrong. This wasn't some fantasy. This was her.
I scrolled back, replaying snippets, a archaeologist of my own ruin. Every pass revealed another damning detail. The small chip in the bedside table we’d been meaning to fix. The specific way she tossed her hair over her right shoulder. It was all there. A pristine, horrific record.
I didn’t know what to feel. The anger was a simmering volcano, the jealousy a cold snake coiling around my heart. But beneath it all, humming under my skin, was that undeniable, electric current of desire. I was hard, aching, caught in a vicious loop of betrayal and need. I wanted to destroy the screen. I wanted to watch it again.
The sound of a key in the front door shattered the silence. I slammed the laptop shut, my body flushing with a panicked guilt, as if I were the one who had done something wrong. The hallway light switched on, spilling a yellow wedge into the living room.
“Hey, you,” she said, her voice warm and familiar. She dropped her purse on the entryway table with a soft thud. “You’re still up? Did you eat?”
She walked into the room, smelling of night air and her favorite perfume. She smiled at me, a genuine, tired smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes. Our eyes. She looked exactly the same. How could she look exactly the same?
“Yeah,” I managed, my voice rough. “I ate.”
She leaned down, her hair brushing my cheek, and pressed a soft, absent-minded kiss to my forehead. “Good. I’m exhausted. Those girls can talk forever.” She straightened up and stretched, a movement that pulled her shirt tight across her chest, and for a horrifying second, all I could see was the ghost of that black lace.
“I’m gonna go wash up,” she murmured, already heading toward our bedroom. Our bedroom.
That was two days ago.
The video is still there. In my history. In my head. I open the browser, my finger hovering over the delete button on the history tab. I tell myself I’ll do it. I’ll wipe it clean and never think of it again.
But I don’t.
I just sit there in the dark, listening to the sound of the shower running, and I wonder what I’m really looking for. Proof that it was all a lie? Or proof that the woman in that video, the one who moaned with such raw, unfiltered hunger, is the same one now humming in our shower.
She walks out, wrapped in a towel, her skin flushed and steaming. “You coming to bed?” she asks, her voice soft with impending sleep.
She smiles at me, and all I can see is
