Chapter 1

The bell above the door of ‘Anne’s Sweet Time Bakery’ chimed, a sound so quaint and pure it felt like a memory. Ben stepped inside, and the scent of vanilla, yeast, and caramelized sugar wrapped around him like a warm, edible hug. It was a time capsule, all checkerboard floors, gleaming chrome fixtures, and the soft, staticky hum of a vintage radio playing a big band tune.

And then there was her.

“Well, hello there,” a voice, smooth as honey and just as sweet, pulled his gaze to the counter. She leaned against it, a vision in a tailored, floral-print dress that hugged a figure that was nothing short of breathtaking. A starched white apron was tied neatly around her narrow waist, and fiery red hair was piled into an elegant, yet somehow untamed, victory roll. Her smile was a promise. “Haven’t seen you in my shop before.”

Ben found his voice, which suddenly felt too rough for such a refined place. “First time. I was just… drawn in.”

“I have that effect on people,” she said, her smile deepening. A dusting of flour decorated her cheekbone. He had the sudden, wild urge to brush it away. “I’m Anne. And this,” she gestured with a flour-dusted hand, “is my kingdom of butter and sugar.”

“Ben,” he managed. His eyes traveled over the display case of perfect éclairs, flaky croissants, and fruit tarts that gleamed like jewels. But his attention kept snapping back to her. The confident tilt of her chin, the playful glint in her green eyes, the way she looked at him like she was reading a book she already knew the ending to.

“Anything catch your eye, Ben?” she asked, her tone light, but the question felt layered, heavy.

“It’s all incredible. You made all this?”

“Every last crumb.” She leaned forward, and the neckline of her dress gaped just enough to offer a tantalizing glimpse of the soft, freckled swell of her breasts. His mouth went dry. “But I have something special that’s not in the case yet. A new recipe. A passion project. I’ve been waiting for the right taste-tester to walk through that door.”

The air between them crackled. This was more than a sales pitch. It felt like an interview. An audition. “Yeah? What’s it called?”

“I call it ‘The Daydream,’” she murmured, her voice dropping to an intimate pitch that vibrated right through him. She turned and retrieved a small, golden-brown danish from a tray behind her. It was still warm, radiating a scent of almond and something deeper, more exotic. “It’s got a frangipane base… a hint of orange blossom… and my own special spice blend. A family secret.”

She placed it on a small china plate and slid it across the counter. Her fingertips brushed his, and a jolt of pure, undiluted heat shot straight up his arm. Jesus.

“For me?” he asked, feeling foolish.

“Only if you promise to be honest,” she said, her eyes locking with his. They were mesmerizing, pools of molten emerald. “I need to know exactly what it makes you feel.”

He lifted the pastry. It was lighter than he expected. He took a bite.

Oh.

Flavor exploded on his tongue. The buttery, flaky layers gave way to the rich, nutty almond paste, cut through with the delicate perfume of orange. But beneath it was something else, something earthy and warm and slightly… euphoric. It was the most delicious thing he had ever tasted. A low groan of pleasure escaped him before he could stop it.

Anne’s smile was triumphant. “Good?”

“It’s… incredible,” he breathed, taking another eager bite. A pleasant warmth began to spread through his chest, a cozy, languid feeling. His limbs started to feel pleasantly heavy. “What’s… what’s in that spice?”

“A little of this, a little of that,” she purred, coming around the counter. She moved with a hypnotic grace. The world seemed to be softening at the edges, the big band music fading into a pleasant, distant hum. He blinked, trying to focus on her. She was even more beautiful up close, her skin porcelain-perfect.

“Starting to feel a little sleepy, sweetheart?” she asked, her voice now the only clear thing in the room. It wrapped around him, a silken rope pulling him gently downward.

“Mmm. Just… really relaxed all of a sudden.” His words were starting to slur. The empty plate slipped from his fingers, but he didn’t hear it shatter. All he could hear was her.

“That’s the daydream part,” she whispered, now right beside him. She took his arm. Her touch was electric, even through the fog enveloping his mind. “It’s working just perfectly. Come on, big guy. Let’s get you sitting down.”

He was too blissed out to resist, too captivated by her to care. She guided him to a plush, velvet-upholstered armchair in a cozy corner of the shop. He sank into it, the softness swallowing him whole. His head lolled back against the cushion. Anne knelt before him, her face level with his. She brushed a strand of hair from his forehead, her touch impossibly gentle.

“Just let go, Ben,” she murmured, her lips inches from his. He could smell her perfume now, something like vanilla and wild roses, mixing with the exotic spice on his own breath. “The real tasting is about to begin. I’ve been so eager to have you all to myself.”

His eyes fluttered shut. The last thing he saw was her radiant, hungry smile. The last thing he felt was her hand, stroking his cheek.

Then, nothing but velvety, irresistible blackness.

His head fell to the side, his breathing evening out into the deep, steady rhythm of unconsciousness.

Anne stayed there for a moment, watching him. A slow, possessive smile spread across her face. She leaned in close, her lips brushing the shell of his ear, her whisper a promise only the void could hear.

So eager…
