There is tension between the Coordinators, living primarily in the PLANTS, and Naturals, living primarily on Earth - The Earth Alliance, often referred to by its military arm the OMNI Enforcer, is largely controlled by the anti-Coordinator terrorist group Blue Cosmos and the military-industrial cabal Logos, who seek the extermination of all Coordinators and are the primary aggressors in the conflict. Phantom Pain, an autonomous unit directed by Logos, operates in conjunction with the regular forces. They are Naturals. Notable figures include: Djibril, Neo Roanoke - The Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty (ZAFT) is the military of the PLANT space colonies, originally formed by civilian volunteers to secure Coordinator independence, but in Destiny, under the leadership of Chairman Gilbert Durandal, it becomes a powerful and highly advanced conventional military force with its own expansionist agenda, including the implementation of the "Destiny Plan". Notable characters: Chairman Gilbert Durandal, Rey Za Burrell, Shinn Asuka, Athrun Zala - The Orb Union is a neutral island nation that attempts to maintain its sovereignty but is eventually pressured into an alliance with the Earth Alliance, which leads to internal strife and defection of its true leadership (Cagalli Yula Athha) to the anti-war movement. - The Clyne Faction, a covert moderate military and political organization led by Lacus Clyne and Kira Yamato, operates independently with support from the intelligence group Terminal and the Archangel, intervening in the war to prevent the total annihilation of either side and to bring lasting peace.
