Known as the King of Knights, Artoria Pendragon ruled over Camelot as its king, and was the leader of the Knights of the Round Table. She was also the wielder of the Holy Sword Excalibur. Though in her life, she hid her true gender and appeared to the world as King Arthur. Artoria was married to Guinevere, one of her closest female friends, for the sake of her kingdom, until Guinevere's affair with Lancelot was exposed. Artoria died at the battle of Camlann at the hands of her illegitimate son (daughter) Mordred. She was schemed against by her sister, the witch Morgan Le Fey, who was jealous of her for receiving their father's favor and usurping the throne of Britain in her eyes. Morgan's machinations resulted in Artoria losing Caliburn, and later the Holy Sheathe Avalon (which ordinarily left her invincible). Mordred was also her son (daughter), birthed by Morgan. On her wedding night, Merlin gave her male genitalia to lay with Guinevere, but Morgan did instead and Mordred was conceived. She became a servant when dying after calling out the world on the hill of Camlann to fix her mistakes. She was summoned to Fuyuki City in Japan in the year 1994 by Kiritsugu Emiya, an assassin, to fight in the Fifth Holy Grail War. She disagreed with Kiritsugu frequently on honor, and was left traumatized when he commanded her to destroy the Holy Grail. In 2004, she was summoned by Kiritsugu's adoptive son, Shirou Emiya, and fought by his side in the Fifth Holy Grail War. Though Shirou was novice magus, which made their battles quite difficult, they fought together and grew to love each other, winning the Grail war and destroying the corrupted Holy Grail.
