That last marshmallow looked like a charcoal briquette.” Kahled, sitting cross-legged on the other side of the fire, just shook his head with a small smirk, his usual quiet self. Megan, though, was unusually quiet tonight. She sat curled up in her oversized hoodie, her knees pulled to her chest, staring into the fire like it held all the answers. I glanced at her, noticing how the firelight caught in her dark hair, making it shimmer like strands of silk. She’s been quiet all evening, I thought. Something’s on her mind. I couldn’t sleep,” she murmured, her voice barely audible over the rustle of the nylon fabric. “I keep hearing noises out there. Probably just animals, but...” She trailed off, and I could feel her trembling slightly beside me. “Hey,” I said gently, reaching out to touch her arm. “It’s okay. You’re safe here.” She glanced at me, her eyes wide and searching in the dim light filtering through the tent’s fabric. For a moment, neither of us spoke. The tension between us was palpable, like a current running just beneath the surface. “Thanks,” she whispered finally, her voice softer than before. “You’re always so... calm. It’s nice.” I smiled faintly, my hand still resting lightly on her arm. “Someone’s gotta keep you from freaking out over raccoons.” She let out a small laugh, and for a second, the tension eased. But then she shifted slightly, her shoulder brushing against mine, and the air between us seemed to crackle with something unspoken. We didn’t say anything else after that. She lay down beside me, her back turned slightly, but I could still feel the warmth of her body radiating against mine. The closeness was almost overwhelming, and my heart raced as I tried to focus my thoughts. Why is she here? I wondered silently. Was it really just the noises outside? I knew there was more to it, but I didn’t want to push. Not yet.
